Unfortunately, most businesses have no clue how to use Facebook in their marketing mix. Like all social media marketing efforts, your Facebook marketing plan, or strategy comes first.
Here is a short checklist to help you get started with marketing your business on Facebook.
The 7 Basics of Facebook Marketing
A social media strategy is much more than what we’re going to see here, it’s about branding your business online. But in order to start using Facebook as a marketing tool, use these tips to start on the right foot.
1. Your objectives
Like anything, starting with a strategy is crucial, and often overlooked. Starting by defining your goals and objectives can only help you setup a successful Facebook marketing campaign.
2. Your profile
Once you know what you’ll be expecting from your marketing efforts on Facebook, start by building a strong profile. Having crap on your wall such as Farmville and other games is not something that will help you in your efforts. Like anything, fix yourself up!
3. Your Fan Page
Fan pages are extremely powerful if you know what you’re doing. Start by creating a nice Fan Page using Facebook’s possibilities such as FBML (still working as i’m writing this, but Facebook plans to move towards iframe).
4. Incentives
Try creating incentives, giving your user a freebie or a coupon if the visitor clicks on “like”. This can cause a real viral effect and get you loads of fans in record time. Of course, if you’re actually providing value to your visitors.
5. Promote your Fan Page
Lots of tools are now available to promote your Fan Page. Adding a link / image on your website promoting your Fan Page is real easy to do and has lots of benefits. Communicate and share valuable information with others, this will get you more visibility and fans. Sharing your Fan page on your other social networks such as Twitter, Linkedin and even Youtube.
6. Your Facebook badge or image
Make sure your image is nicely designed and promoting your business accurately. You can also add a little reminder on your image asking people to click your “like” button.
7. Adding content
After creating your Fan Page, you need to keep it updated by sharing valuable information with your fans. A fan page with no activity is worthless. Also, engage with your fans, post questions and comments on your Fan Page, reply to your users comments. Interacting with your fans is what social marketing is all about.
I hope this short tutorial can serve you as a good base for your Facebook marketing efforts. And remember, don’t look at this purely as a way to gain more customers, see your social media efforts as bringing value to the community, this is the future of social media marketing.
